Day trips from Marrakech: 5 escapes not to miss

Barques bleues du port d’Essaouira

Marrakech is an ideal base for exploring. In a single day you can reach the ocean, cross the High Atlas or discover a ksar listed as a World Heritage Site. Here are five ideas for a day trip from Marrakech, with driving times and our tips for making the most of it.

1. Essaouira, the windy city

About 190 kilometres away, or nearly 3 hours by road, Essaouira charms visitors with its harbour full of blue boats, its skala facing the Atlantic and its medina, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. On the way, stops at an argan oil cooperative and the sight of goats perched in argan trees have become classics.

Our Marrakech → Essaouira day trip leaves in the morning and gives you several free hours on site.

2. Ait Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate via the Tizi n’Tichka

The road crosses the High Atlas over the Tizi n’Tichka pass, more than 2,200 metres above sea level, with impressive panoramas. The ksar of Ait Ben Haddou, a World Heritage Site, has been the backdrop for many films. Allow 3½ to 4 hours’ drive each way: it is a long day, but an unforgettable one.

3. The Ourika valley and Berber villages

About an hour from Marrakech, the Ourika valley offers cool air, waterfalls and earthen villages clinging to the mountainside. It is an ideal outing in summer, when the city heats up. A short hike to the Setti Fatma waterfalls calls for good shoes.

4. The Agafay desert at sunset

No need to travel hundreds of kilometres for a desert atmosphere: the Agafay stone desert is about 45 minutes from Marrakech, with views of the Atlas. Camel ride, quad bike or dinner in a tent: it is the perfect escape at the end of the day.

5. The Ouzoud waterfalls

About 150 kilometres to the north-east, the Ouzoud waterfalls are among the highest in Morocco. Shady paths, pools and Barbary macaques in the olive trees: plan a full day and suitable footwear.

Group excursion or private driver?

Group excursions are cheap, but follow a fixed programme with stops that are sometimes commercial. With a private driver, you choose the departure time, the stops and the pace. It is particularly enjoyable with family or friends: for several people, the price difference shrinks considerably.

Our tips for a successful day trip

  • Leave early in the morning to enjoy the light and avoid the heat.
  • Bring water, a cap, sunscreen and comfortable shoes.
  • Keep some change for entrance fees, local guides and small purchases.
  • In winter, the Atlas can be snowy: take a warm jacket.
